Senior Infrastructure Engineer

 

This is a varied role however the focus is on Infrastructure. The purpose of the role is to assist the Head of Infrastructure to support and monitor IT systems; responsible for the upkeep, configuration and reliable operation of all MMS systems including co-lo hosting environments, office/remote end-user IT equipment and all related hardware, software and licensing.

Core to this role is providing a reliable and secure server and network platform to host the Meddbase hosting environment which is mission critical to our clients and ultimately underpins the success and reputation of the company.

Key functions and responsibilities

  • Help manage, maintain, and monitor IT systems & infrastructure over multiple data centres and cloud. This will include visits to data centres in London & Woking.
  • Provide IT support across two offices (London & Southampton) to employees on site and to remote workers and act as a point of escalation.
  • Manage and maintain back up and recoverability testing to the IT systems.
  • Manage projects through lifecycle, ensuring deadlines are met, able to take ownership of issues until resolution is found.
  • Regular, planned late hours to support upgrades including security patching, reboots and installation of new hardware (late hours can be reclaimed flexibly in agreement with Head of Infrastructure.
  • On-call rota for out of hours support.
  • Document IT Systems and assist the documentation process within the department.
  • Liaise with equipment and software vendors for procurement of hardware, software and licensing.
  • Work with compliance team by answering questions, identifying gaps and ensuring evidence is readily available and up to date for annual audits, regular supplier audits and sales.
  • Onboard new starters with required equipment (including pre-ordering & configuring laptops, updating the asset register, providing onboarding instructions, assign software licences).
  • Offboarding – remove access to various systems, collect IT equipment and repurpose, update asset register.
  • Keep abreast of development in the IT industry and consider proactively how these may be incorporated into the
  • IT Systems Infrastructure.

Relevant experience and key skills

  • Server infrastructure – (Dell/Hyper-V environment) Configuring iDRAC cards, installing hardware (memory/disks), configuring OpenManage.
  • Hyper-V – creating and managing VM’s, replication & failover, managing & routing traffic over virtual switches, managing iSCSI from the device to the VM, routing VM traffic over dedicated VLANS.
  • Storage devices – (QNAP) RAID configuration, Fiber channel and Raid cards, commissioning/troubleshooting iSCSI (LUN/Logical Partitioning).
  • Windows server OS – (2012r2/2016/2019) Configure & setup, monitoring, good knowledge of Powershell, experience managing network teaming, Active Directory.
  • Firewalls – Ideally Watchguard (Clustering & HA Configuration, Port and IP based rules, NAT, DNS, SSL IPSEC & IKEv2 VPNs, Managing traffic between VLANS).
  • Networking – Layered 3 Switches (Cisco/Netgear, TCP/IP, DNS, Managing & creating VLANs, Trunk Ports & NIC Teaming).
  • Cloud technologies – (Microsoft 365, Azure, AzureAD, Azure Arc, Azure Recovery Vaults, Key Vaults, Defender, Security Center, Power Platform AC, SSO, B2C, VM’s, storage accounts, Enterprise applications).
  • Linux OS – (CentOS, Debian, Ubuntu, Alma) Scripting & commands, networking and setup.
  • Microsoft – (Active Directory, DNS, IIS, MSSQL, SCCM, SCDPM).
  • Scripting (IAC, Powershell, Bash).
  • Infrastructure as code (DSC/Puppet/Chef/Terraform).
  • Monitoring solutions (PRTG, Graylog, Grafana, Prometheus).
  • Software development tools (GIT, Teamcity, Microsoft TFS, CI/CD).
  • Desktop support (Lenovo laptops, desktops, MS surface & laptops, VoIP, VPN, BYOD, anti-virus)

Essential

  • 3 – 5 Years previous experience in a similar role environment.
  • Appreciation of Information security and working within an ISO270001 compliant organisation.
  • Excellent communication skills / explain technical terms to non-technical people.
  • Strong organisation and time management skills.
  • Able to troubleshoot and solve problems identified through a variety of events in a technical environment.
  • Knowledge of ITIL and change management.
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team.
  • Ability to work in a pressured environment.
  • Any relevant qualification desirable not essential

Desirable

  • Working with HSCN / N3 Services.
  • TrendMicro, SIEM, SOC.
  • Using SQL Server (Managing replication / monitoring / HA / backup) and SQL scripting.
  • Using cloudflare for DNS and load balancing.
  • Working with a development team and SREs to support a full SaaS environment.
